Commitments by Developing Country Parties under the Paris Agreement

Briefing paper

Date produced: 09/05/2016

In December 2015, the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) adopted the Paris Agreement. It establishes a general framework for a universal, long-term climate regime under the UNFCCC. Following its entry into force, the Agreement will be formally binding on its Parties. This paper focuses on developing country Parties’ commitments on all of the substantive areas of the Agreement (mitigation, etc.), distinguishing those that are mandatory from those that are voluntary.
