The European Capacity Building Initiative (ecbi) ran a capacity-building workshop for junior LDC negotiators in Dakar, Senegal, over the course of 15-16 June. Ecbi organises three of these workshops annually (for negotiators from Asia, francophone Africa and anglophone Africa). These sessions are expected to continue through to 2019.
The workshop in Dakar was attended by almost 30 participants from over a dozen countries including Madagascar, Haiti and Comoros from outside the African continent.
Participants engaged in substantive discussions on the various thematic areas of the climate regime and the growing work on implementing the Paris Agreement adopted at COP 21. Discussions also covered international legal issues and there was a session on legal language.
Participants also took part in mock drafting and mock negotiating exercises and were encouraged to discuss and debate throughout the workshop.
Participants also had an opportunity to hear from the Honourable Minister of the Environment of the Gambia, Pa Ousman Jarju, who had himself been a beneficiary of the Ecbi’s capacity-building programme previously.
